Can TMJ Disorder Cause Ear Pain?

Your jaw joints are located very close to your ears – which is why localized pain due to TMJ disorder is often felt in both of these areas simultaneously. Any stress or dysfunction felt in these joints has the potential to be felt in the ears, rather than the jaw, which can seem confusing. It’s worth noting that sometimes this pain is accidentally mistaken for an ear infection, but TMJ issues won’t respond to ear drops or similar treatments, so pay close attention to your symptoms and don’t shrug off seeking help.
Can TMJ Disorder Cause Neck Pain?

Similar to how issues with the jaw joints can lead to ear pain, TMJ disorder can also trigger neck pain. In fact, up to 70% of patients with TMJ disorder report neck pain as one of their primary symptoms – specifically, muscle tenderness and muscle pain around the neck region of the spine. However, a simple cold compress or over-the-counter pain reliever isn’t going to be enough to resolve the source of your pain. Once we’ve examined your jaw, we’ll have a better idea of what treatment(s) can resolve your issue.
How We Treat Ear & Neck Pain

Our team takes a careful yet comprehensive approach when treating ear and neck pain. However, rather than simply addressing the symptoms and curing the pain, we’ll get to the bottom of the issue itself so that your discomfort isn’t just relieved – it’s permanently prevented moving forward. We might recommend the use of a custom-made oral appliance or another similar device to ensure that your jaw position is healthy while you’re sleeping and your alignment isn’t causing any jaw joint issues. We usually also advise making certain lifestyle changes, including regularly exercising and stretching to help strengthen the muscles in the neck and jaw area.
